Also known as "Jalopies" or "Modifieds", these cars were crowd favorites at short tracks all over North America in the 40's, 50's and early 60's. Many of the cars are old coupes and coaches from the 30's. In the mid-60's, these body styles were beginning to be phased out, replaced by Supermodifieds and/or Late Models as the top class at most race tracks. A club was formed in Ontario in 1966 called the Ontario Amateur Racing Club, and the cars were called "Hobby Cars" because for the people who raced them, keeping this class of auto racing going was a hobby! To this day, you can still see these cars race under the name Canadian Vintage Modifieds. They have 25 events scheduled in 2004 and their website - which has a very detailed history of the class and club - is www.VintageMods.com |
