| Joe Hylwka @ Oswego Speedway - This is one of the first Doug Duncan-built Supermodifieds, and was a very fast car for it's time. In 1965, Hylwka broke the track record at Flamboro by running a lap of 15.10 seconds, .04 seconds faster than the previous record held by Jack Sharpe of Lobo, and won 2 100 lap features in 3 nights at Flamboro and Delaware. In 1966 he finished 5th in the Oswego International Classic. Shortly thereafter, Joe became a regular at Oswego, driving first in the Lawless #64, and then the famous Gioia #9. Doug Duncan later went on to build one of the first successful rear-engine Supermodifieds at Oswego Speedway with driver John Spencer of Toronto. Hylwka was forced into early retirement as a driver in 1971 due to heart disease, but continued as a car owner, with Spencer frequently behind the wheel of his machines. Hylwka was involved in racing well into the 90's as a car owner on the Can-Am Midget circuit, until he passed away in 1999 at age 67. |
